On 20th April, a Thai gym owner shared his experience with powering his gym using solar cells. In his Facebook post, he said that when he first built his gym 8 years ago, he thought that renewable energy would be the future. As a result, he invested ฿200,000 into installing solar panels for his gym.

Prior to the solar cells, he said he paid about ฿7,000 per month for electricity. After the solar cells, he said he ended up saving around ฿2,000 per month.

For the past year, the gym owner said he has paid only around ฿100 per month for electricity. This was what made him want to share his experience. He also shared his most recent bill, which amounted to only ฿35.

Another point that caught netizens’ attention was the usage history included in the bill. The history indicated that the gym owner used 0 units of electricity whenever the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) checked his electric meter in the past 6 months.

Some netizens expressed skepticism

Netizens expressed skepticism over his incredible savings. One commenter pointed out that it is impossible to have 0 units of electricity usage. The commenter notes that since solar cells do not generate electricity at night, electricity usage must go up during that time.

The commenter also added that the gym owner should contact EGAT to see if there’s a malfunction with his meter, otherwise, he may have to make some painful back payments.

Solar cells to reduce electric bill: worth it?

Despite the possible errors from the meter, the gym owner has recouped the costs of his initial investment over the past 8 years. So if you’re also planning to stay at your current residence for a long period of time, then investing in solar cells is probably a worthwhile investment for you as well.

Beyond the benefits for your own pocket change, solar cells are also a long-term investment for our planet. So we look forward to seeing more people consider renewable energy sources for their homes.
