Thai woman gets “microscopic” shrimp fried rice

Shrimp fried rice is hands down, the best fried rice. We all know what to expect: rice, eggs, shrimp, cucumber on the side, and optional scallions. And one Thai woman got exactly that, but not quite.

This particular customer was recently surprised when she opened her lunch box to find something rather unexpected – “microscopic” shrimp fried rice. Or at least, that’s how it appeared despite the generous serving, in stark contrast to the teensy shrimp in her food.

Here’s how the ironically big surprise went down when she opened her box of fried rice, and the jealous reactions she received from Thai netizens.

Thai customer gets more shrimp then she asked for, but also less

For context, most stalls would typically serve two or three pieces of shrimp with a regular box of fried rice in Thailand. Four if you’re lucky or really cute.

One Thai woman on TikTok apparently got way more shrimp than she could ask for in her serving of fried rice, but not in the form that most people would expect.

In a short video clip posted on 21st November 2022, you’ll observe that she’s certainly got more than just four shrimp in her box. So you could say that she got a bargain.

But then again, if she didn’t zoom in, we probably wouldn’t see any of the shrimp, thanks to their extremely small size. In other words, you could even say she got less than what she asked for.

One thing’s for sure though: she definitely got shrimp in her fried rice.

Jealous reactions from netizens online

Many Thai netizens howled in laughter at the sight of this lady’s predicament, but some also saw it as a bargain.

Translation: So much shrimp. I only get around 4 from the place near my house.

One man offered an explanation as to why they were using such tiny shrimp.

Translation: Probably using the leftover tiny shrimp from making “dancing shrimp (กุ้งเต้น)”.

The “dancing shrimp” mentioned in this comment is a dish that’s an Isaan region specialty, and they’d commonly use tiny shrimp like the ones seen in the video.

If that was indeed the case, as long as it still tastes like good shrimp fried rice, we think it’s still a great deal for both parties.

Microscopic shrimp fried rice is still shrimp fried rice

Although it wasn’t the shrimp fried rice she had in mind, we’re glad that the customer still got a good laugh out of it. If you ever needed an example for why size doesn’t matter, this might be as good as any.

Even if their shrimp was smaller than most restaurants, they still managed to make their dish a talking point and certainly a bargain.
