Brave Thai teacher rescues snake from scared kids

Handling snakes can be quite scary. If you’re living in rural Thailand, however, it’s a necessary skill to have, because there’s a high chance you’ll run into one. One brave Thai teacher took it one step further when she rushed in to save a snake from kids who were harming the scared creature.

Here’s how it unfolded and the lesson she taught to the kids afterwards.

Protecting both the kids and the snakes

When kids make a huge ruckus outside their school in rural Thailand, it’s usually because they’ve found a strange critter. So when she heard her students causing a huge fuss, one Thai teacher suspected that they had found a snake.

She rushed outside and found that the kids were chucking rocks at the poor creature who was scurrying away in panic. Fearing the worst for both the creature and her students, she quickly made her way to the snake to stage an emergency rescue.

Although she did not have the same snake-catching equipment as she did at home, she wagered that the snake couldn’t poison her after recognising it as a non-venomous breed. The brave teacher then grabbed its tail barehanded and took it to the nearby woods to let it go safely.

In short, with her swift actions, she had both rescued the snake and kept her young students safe.

Turning the experience into a life lesson for the kids

Although chucking rocks at the harmless snake as it tried to slither away seems cruel, the kids were doing it not out of malice but rather, fear. So the Thai teacher saw this as a great opportunity to teach her young wards about the importance of respecting lives.

Even if snakes can seem dangerous, that doesn’t mean that we should react negatively towards them unless it’s absolutely necessary. After all, snakes don’t actively seek out humans to kill, and only bite others in self-defense. She shared with her students that the snake was scared too and that just because the kids were scared, it didn’t mean that they should resort to being violent towards the creature.

We think this a great lesson, not just for snakes but also for respecting the lives of humans and animals alike.

Curbing hostility borne of fear

Many of the worst reactions we see today from people are borne of fear. Whether that be prejudice or hateful brigading, people tend to lash out when they fear for their own safety.

So the next time you see or are a part of hostility, be like the Thai teacher who de-escalated the situation and made it a lesson for her students. Of course, if wild creatures are involved do make sure that the situation is safe for you to handle before jumping right in to help.
