Sri Trat: representing Trat through mother’s recipes

If you’re talking about Thai food, Eastern Thailand is rarely spoken of. But Sri Trat serves Eastern Thai food and is one of the toughest restaurants to get a seat at in the country.

Here’s the story behind their food and why reservations are a must if you want to eat here.

Bringing their owners’ mother’s recipes to life

Anyone knows that Mom’s cooking just hits different. Sri Trat’s owners give their food a comforting feel by basing their menu on their mother’s favourite recipes.

The humble but exceptionally cooked food has won the hearts of both locals and travellers alike.

What makes their cooking even more unique is that their best recipes come from the far eastern province of Trat, which sits on the border of Cambodia. The coastal province serves spicy seafood curries that will feel right at home with Southern Thai cuisine, which is well known for its heat.

If you’re looking to try their rustic food, definitely give their seafood curries like their “Lon Pu Kai (หลนปูไข่)” a try. The dish is a creamy coconut milk soup with crab meat seasoned with shrimp paste and black pepper from Eastern Thailand.

Vibes to match the rustic food

Much like their food, the restaurant’s décor and tableware give off a homey but luxurious feel.

The plates and trays they serve their food feel refined, but also are the kind that you’d find in any Thai home.

The wooden floors and brick walls contrast well with the leather sofas giving it a luxurious feel, but also a welcoming one.

Be sure to get reservations

As one of the most sought after restaurants in the country, simply walking into Sri Trat could have you waiting hours for seats. Even though it’d be worth the wait, it’d be best to call in and reserve seats beforehand.

So make that call and eat some home-cooked meals that will remind you of a mother’s cooking, even if you’ve never had this cuisine before.
