Songkran is Thais’ all-time favourite holiday. Unfortunately, due to the rising number of COVID-19 infections that surged on 15th March 2020, this well-loved water festival will be officially postponed.

Officials discussed decision last week

The Tourism Authority of Thailand discussed the idea last week that Thailand should postpone Songkran to July 2020. The Tourism Authority then explained that the rainy season will make it a good time for the water festival.

Wissanu Krea-ngam, Deputy Prime Minister, mentioned on 16th March 2020 that Songkran holidays from 13th-15th April 2020 will be postponed until further notice, no thanks to the coronavirus outbreak.

Ultimately, it was concluded in the meeting chaired by Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha on 16th March 2020 that the three-day holiday period from 13th-15th April 2020 should be celebrated in July instead of April. However, there are no specific dates announced yet.

We’re sad that this joyful event needs to be postponed, but it would be better to keep the virus under control. Take care, everyone!
