Chonburi eatery celebrates election results with ฿31 som tam

Many Thais are celebrating Move Forward Party’s 2023 election victory. While many are simply buying lottery tickets with the party’s ballot number 31, one Chonburi eatery is celebrating by offering ฿31 som tam throughout the entire month of May.

Here’s the story behind the decision.

Thais are still buzzing over the exciting results of one of our most pivotal elections ever. Many are celebrating in the very Thai way of buying lotto tickets based on the numbers from the election.

Chonburi eatery Loei Ma Tum Na Pa (เลยมาตำ ณ. นาป่า) took it one step further. On election day, the eatery made a Facebook post promising that if Move Forward Party won, they’d sell their som tam pla ra at ฿31 per dish.

With Move Forward Party’s decisive victory the following day, the eatery followed up that post with affirmation that they’ll be selling ฿31 som tam for the entire month of May. Of course, netizens are interested in this topical promotion as well.

If there’s a surefire combination of things that’ll get to a Thai person’s heart fast, it’s probably food and discounts. It’s even better if it’s som tam.

A couple of commenters said they’d definitely be dropping by daily for that deal. Other commenters said they’d be dropping by when there’s a holiday. Sadly, there aren’t many of those remaining in May.

Thais love celebrating with good food

While elections can be divisive, they should still be celebrated for giving people agency over their country’s governance.

And if you’re thinking of celebrating in Thailand, few things are better than sharing som tam with close friends.
