The Place 168 tom yum noodles in Bangkok
Pratunam is a popular shopping destination for both Thais and foreigners thanks to its cheap and wide range of stores selling everything from clothes and accessories to handicrafts. But the area also has lots of food stalls for shopaholics to enjoy.
If you’re starving after your shopping adventure, we recommend visiting The Place 168. This Thai restaurant is hidden along Petchaburi Soi 19 and will fill you up with its massive bowl of tom yum noodles – all within a nice air-conditioned space for a hot day.
Quiet Thai eatery hidden in Pratunam
With malls like Shibuya Shopping Mall nearby, Petchaburi Soi 19 is bustling with clothing shops, vendors, and tonnes of eateries.
While walking through the crowd, keep your eyes peeled for The Place 168. This secret Thai eatery is tucked away on the opposite side of Juldis Mansion’s carpark, so use that as your landmark while here.
The store is a good place to escape from the noise and enjoy some air-con and delicious Thai dishes.
Around 20 seats are available both indoor and outdoor areas. Don’t worry about the crowd, because the staff confirmed that customers come in and out through the day with queues that move quickly.
Giant bowl of tom yum at The Place 168
When at the store, I saw almost every table order a giant bowl of MAMA Noodles In Tom Yum Soup (฿195, ~USD6.40) which came with toppings like seafood, meatballs, crispy pork and 2 runny egg yolks.

The taste of tom yum hits you right from the start. The scent from herbs like galangal and lemongrass among others give the soup a good, rich flavour. The soup is also not that spicy, so people who can’t handle the heat don’t have to worry, as it is manageable.
All the ingredients, especially the seafood like juicy prawns and squid, are well prepared and fresh without any fishy smells. The texture of the meatballs is not too mushy and is perfectly seasoned. The portion of thinly sliced crispy pork is just right too – it even has fatty bits that give it a chewy texture.
Mix everything so that all the ingredients are coated in the creamy soup.
For someone who prefers clear tom yum soups, Leng Zap (M: ฿150 ~USD4.92, L: ฿220 ~USD7.22) is a spicy pork bone soup that’s another must-try. And though the dishes at The Place 168 are mostly Thai recipes, they also offer steak on the menu too.
Visit The Place 168 on a shopping break
The Place 168 is great for Pratunam shoppers, especially on a hot day. The store opens early at 10.30am every day, so you can pop by for breakfast before your shopping adventure.
The staff here are really nice too and were recommending the delicious dishes I had to try. So if you’re not too sure what to order aside from the MAMA noodles, ask away.
If you have a chance to go shopping around the Pratunam area, don’t hesitate to drop by The Place 168.
