“Phuket model” to be pushed back
As Thailand’s tourism sector is beaten down by the pandemic, Phuket is the country’s first tourist destination to try to stand up, but things don’t seem to be in its favour.
On Monday, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) revealed that there’s a high possibility they will delay the “Phuket Model” after the country found the first case of COVID-19 after 100 days without any local transmission.
Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, assured the press that Thailand must do its best to curb the infections. “We simply cannot afford a second wave of infections,” he said.
What is the “Phuket Model”?

Prior to the new case of COVID-19 surfacing, the Phuket Model was initially proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to allow a limited number of foreigners to enjoy vacations on the resort island.
Out of their own pocket, all tourists must take tests for COVID-19 and undergo a 14-day hotel quarantine.
If tested negative, they would also be allowed to travel to other provinces after staying in Phuket for at least 7 days after the quarantine.
