Phed Mark: authentic pad krapao shop in Ekkamai

Pad krapao is the daily driver of Thai cuisine. Because of that, it can be hard to find “the best” pad krapao in Thailand.

Phed Mark is a small shop in Ekkamai whose goal is to be the shop people think of when looking for great pad krapao. Here’s the story behind the shop and how their food is spicy, even for Thais.

Pad krapao is the Honda Civic of Thai food. It’s affordable and always reliable. Unless something truly wacky is going on, it’s hard to go wrong when ordering this dish.

For the same reason, there really isn’t a shop in Thailand that has a reputation for being the place to go to for pad krapao.

This was what four Thai foodies, including Mark Wiens, were discussing when they decided to start a shop together to serve the best pad krapao in town.

While the jury is still out on whether or not this is the best pad krapao around, the shop’s one dish is done well, and is hot even for the Thai palette.

Spicy even by Thai standards

Mark Wiens is famous for his motto “If it’s not spicy, I’m not eating it (Mai Phet Mai Gin, ไม่เผ็ดไม่กิน)”. Fittingly, Phed Mark serves pad krapao at the spicy level that Mark eats.

How hot is it? It’s enough to get some Thais to begin sweating and taking it easy.

If you’re scared, don’t worry because you can fully customise your spice levels from not spicy at all to full-on regret.

The dish is stir-fried intensely so that the dish comes out drier, which concentrates the flavours.

You can also get the Thai-style fried egg. The crispy whites add a great crunch to the dish while the creamy yolk will help balance out the heat. They also use duck eggs for extra richness.

Phed Mark promises delicious and spicy pad krapao

Whether you’re ordering in or getting it delivered, Phed Mark sets a high standard for pad krapao.

So next time you’re hungry but not sure of what to eat, do what Thais do and order pad krapao.

For other places that offer local go-to meals in Bangkok, how about smoky stir-fried wide noodles, Thai-style biryani, or this 60-year-old braised pork leg shop?
