Thai Government Offers Travel Insurance For Tourists

The Thai government is adding another program to help tourists coming to Thailand. This time they’ve set aside 50 million baht to fund a travel insurance scheme that’ll offer coverage to foreign tourists visiting Thailand from now until 31st August 2024.

Here are the requirements, conditions, and where you can register.

Although the insurance is quite lucrative, to be eligible you must be a tourist entering the country with a tourist visa or as a visa-free tourist. That means this won’t cover people who are traveling to Thailand for work.

The insurance will also only cover incidents that occur up until 31 August 2024. Said incident must also not occur because of carelessness, risky, or illegal activities.

The maximum coverage is up to 1 million baht in the case of death and up to ฿300,000 in the case of grievous injuries that lead to organ loss, permanent blindness, or disability. Otherwise, there will be full coverage of all medical costs up to ฿500,000.

Apply online, at the airport, or any local tourist centre

If you’re eligible, all you have to do to register for this is to either contact any local tourist centre or simply register at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airports. You can also apply online through the Thailand Traveller Safety website run by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports here.

Should an accident occur, you can claim medical expenses within 15 days of the incident and expect to be paid within 15 days after the report. You may be expected to pay the medical fees first and be reimbursed after.
