Besides popular dishes like pad thai and pad kra pao, another dish Thai locals love to eat is khao rad khaeng, or Thai rice and curry. There are lots of street-side shops selling a variety of dishes to pick from, especially around busy areas.

At Foodotel, there are over 30 dishes to pick from each day. The prices are as follows:

  • Rice with one item ฿40
  • Rice with two items ฿50
  • Rice with three items ฿60

Customers can also order each item separately at ฿40-฿120. Side dishes and toppings are offered at ฿5-฿35, ranging from fried egg, boiled egg, century egg, Chinese sausage, Thai pork sausage, chicken wing, and deep-fried mackerel.

Note: Take-away orders cost more ฿10 for a food container. Alternatively, you could bring your own.

After asking what their most popular dish was, we got Moo Yok, which translates to “jade-coloured pork”, thanks to its green colour.

The staff told us that this was a family favourite, with the recipe coming from their granny. She would add Thai coriander to the mix of minced pork, which gives it its unique green colour. We also really liked how it had a strong scent of garlic and pepper.

Another bestseller is their Moo Whan – tender caramelised pork belly that is sweet and salty

Our meal wouldn’t have been complete without some curry, so we got a side of Red Curry With Chicken And Bamboo Shoots. The curry was thick and creamy, which made it less spicy.

Another dish we’d recommend is Tom Kha Kai – the lesser known soup as compared to the iconic tom yum. This is a galangal coconut soup with chicken, and has a nice tang to it thanks to the galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass added to the soup.

This was my favourite dish as it wasn’t too overpowering, and had the right balance of flavours. It wasn’t too sweet from the coconut, and the addition of cabbage and straw mushrooms added good texture to the soup.

Before you get a food coma, you still have one last item to try. Bua Loy (฿30) is a traditional Thai dessert made with chewy taro rice balls in sweet coconut milk.

Other than being a restaurant, Foodotel is also a hotel with rooms on the upper floors. Being family-run, we could see that everyone was passionate about their business. “We would never offer things that even we don’t like to our customers,” said the owner.

Foodotel is tucked away in Soi Charoen Nakhon 4 which is just across the well-known shopping mall ICONSIAM.

It was also great to eat an authentic Thai meal in a photogenic setting – not your typical street-side restaurant at all. Almost every table is also equipped with plug sockets and free WiFi.
