IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, Thailand
The past weeks have been heavily characterised by rising COVID-19 cases across the country, as well as multiple policies implemented by the government to combat the spread of the virus.
On 5th May 2021, the proposal of creating a new field hospital in Thailand’s largest convention centre, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, was approved by the Centre For COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
Here’s a quick look at why and how the swift decision to transform the largest convention centre in Thailand into a medical facility was made.

Field hospitals in Thailand
The field hospital at the IMPACT Arena will be designated for patients displaying mild COVID-19 symptoms a.k.a “yellow” category patients. The facility is also expected to hold at least 5,200 beds, according to Thai Enquirer.

Earlier in April, Thailand’s government set up field hospitals across the country in response to rising COVID-19 case counts.
These medical facilities were intended to prevent overcrowding in Thailand’s hospitals and to ensure that there are enough treatment centres for all patients.
However, with the country’s largest convention centre now transformed into a field hospital, it could mean that the caseloads may continue to rise.
A response to Khlong Toei COVID-19 cluster
Deciding to transform IMPACT into a field hospital seems to be a response to the recent cluster in the Khlong Toei neighbourhood in Bangkok, which is proving to be one of the hardest hit by COVID-19.
The initial plan was to use the Kodang Stadium in Khlong Toey, but the preparation for that venue would’ve taken longer than to use IMPACT, reported Bangkok Post.

Often seen as its very own “city”, IMPACT boasts multiple exhibition halls as well as hotels and shopping complexes.

This would mean more than ample space for quarantine areas and makeshift wards for potential patients.
Stay vigilant to combat COVID-19
With the current situation, it’s highly important that we continue to do our part in fighting against the virus – stay home, maintain social distancing, and keep your mind healthy throughout this difficult time.
