Thailand Won't Have 24h Curfew As Long As Citizens Cooperate

Officials squash 24-hour curfew rumours

As the rumour of a 24-hour curfew had been forwarded by word of mouth lately, the Interior Ministry denied the claim and mentioned that there is no such order issued yet, as of 6th April 2020.

The head of the government’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration, Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, said there will be no 24-hour curfew as long as people still comply with the current curfew from 10PM-4AM, and if the number of infections drops.

Dr. Taweesin also mentioned that some may have misinterpreted the order imposed by the Interior Ministry to local authorities.

Ministry issues 5 precautionary measures

Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee added that the ministry has only assigned provincial governors to prepare five measures, and these preparations have nothing to do with a round-the-clock curfew. The five measures include:

Preparing quarantine facilities for locals returning from abroad
Coordinating with local administration offices to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in communities.
Preparing food supplies and product distribution centres
Getting ready personnel in case the curfew is extended.
Reporting the situation and all problems to the ministry’s COVID-19 centre.

He also said the ministry will be responsible for making sure that people in every province are able to have access to consumer goods and medical supplies, while local agencies are ready to comply with government’s updated policies.

Mr. Niphon concluded the COVID-19 Administration Centre at Government House will be the authority to issue any order relating to the curfew.
