Transparent public toilets in Japan

In an attempt to add art to the daily lives of citizens, Tokyo has installed transparent public toilets in one of its busiest districts, Shibuya.

The toilets look super modern with their coloured-glass box design, through which anyone can see through when walking by.
This installation is designed by Shigeru Ban Architects, a Pritzker Prize-winning architecture company from Japan.
For aesthetic and practicality

The word ‘transparent’ might have us taken aback a little bit, but the see-through glass walls will turn opaque for our privacy once we lock the door.
Tokyotoilet.jp, the project’s official website, states that “there are two things we worry about when entering a public restroom, especially those located at a park. The first is cleanliness, and the second is whether anyone is inside.”
“This allows users to check the cleanliness and whether anyone is using the toilet from the outside,” they shared.

At night, the toilets light up like beautiful lanterns in multiple colours, adding an aesthetic element to the surroundings.
