Bali is a destination favoured by visitors for being rich in wildlife, and adventurous travellers who wish to one day set foot in its thicc jungles will enjoy spotting rare animals there.

But wait, don’t bother to dig out your passport just yet because we have The Dewa Koh Chang, a Bali-themed resort located amidst the massive jungle in Koh Chang, Trat that may have you wondering if you’re in Thailand or somewhere in the heart of Madagascar’s forests.

For those who love meandering along the beach as much as chilling under leafy trees, Dewa Koh Chang is a resort hidden in a wild jungle and palm trees.

As you walk a few steps towards the entrance, an inviting beach will greet you. Think small waves crashing along the shoreline and soft sand in your toes.

After checking in, take a few more steps and then you’ll spot an extensive pool with teak lounge chairs sitting side by side along the curb.

We love that there are numerous lofty trees standing over bungalows, bringing to mind a scene right from a forest in Madagascar.

On the other side, you will unexpectedly run into two-storey villas covered with thatched roofs, conjuring up an idea of Balinese traditional houses. But once you walk upstairs, you will probably be surprised by the minimalist interiors, that are designed to give a modern look inside the villas.

Firstly, we’ll take you back to the room that overlooks the pool. This is Deluxe Room for ฿3,800 (~USD115)/night based on prices for bookings from April to October.

You’ll notice that the bed is set in the middle of the room with a curtained panel windows on the right side, giving a mix of Balinese and a neutral-toned aesthetic.

We noticed an attached balcony with a smol seating area, great for guests who wish to catch a sunrise the next morning. Speaking of which, that view of the infinity pool reflecting the soaring palm trees on the other side – 10/10.

After basking in the sun on the deck chair for some time, you may feel the impulse to lie in the pool to cool down while watching the clouds roll on by.

If you’d like easier pool access, hop over to the Villa ฿5,000 (~USD151)/night. This villa will paint a picture of a Balinese lodge in your mind the second you have a glimpse of it, for it is decorated with a thatched roof made of actual hay.

Also, the villa has two storeys; the ground floor is a living room with a smart TV where you gather and chit chat in the evening. On the left side, it has a panoramic window and an exit to an outdoor private jacuzzi bar where you can sit and have your back massaged by the powerful water jets.

The ever famous Thai massages are also available here, after a long day of paddling kayaks – which you can rent for ฿300 (~USD9)/hr. Dewa Koh Chang has an in-house massage & spa with massages priced similarly, at ฿300 (~USD9)/hr.

At the end of a fulfilling day, you and your SO will probably be famished. But don’t order a delivery yet, as the resort has a  romantic beach dining experience up its sleeve.

Romantic beach dining with the sunset seafood dinners

There’s nothing quite like dining on the beach in front of a beautiful sunset with the soft sand between your toes.

So if you come with your other-half, this is a chance to have an intimate seafood dinner together under the orange glare over the horizon and show them your romantic side.

For more specific menu options and prices, do ask the resort’s staff and they’ll share the seasonal menu with you directly, but we hear that there are plenty of great seafood dishes.

4-hour drive from Bangkok or 45-minute ferry ride from Trat

So if Madagascar or Bali are a little too far for your first few trips after the pandemic, consider Dewa Koh Chang as it’ll whisk you away to the heart of a less-travelled jungle or allow you to paddle in the indigo ocean at affordable prices.

FYI, to get to Koh Chang, you’ll need to catch a flight or drive to Trat. This takes about 4.5 hours from BKK, before a ferry ride to Koh Chang.

Intrepid explorers, y’all can start packing your bags, especially if you’d like to stay in the heart of nature, while still reaping the benefits of an infinity pool, private jacuzzi and loft rooms.
