Just days after the first gold in men’s singles at the BWF World Championships, Thais have yet another reason to scream and shout in joy – the Thai women’s volleyball team just took the 2023 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship crown.

Here’s what happened in their thrilling victory at home on 6th September 2023.

Although the Thai women’s volleyball team is famous for their prowess, their rival in the finals did not simply let them walk onto the podium.

Despite the roaring home crowd of 5,000 at the Korat Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, the Chinese women held their nerve and took the hometown favourites to a final deciding set.

The thrilling final set didn’t do any favours for the home crowd’s hearts as the match went down to the wire. But screams of joy from around the country made it clear who prevailed just by the skin of their teeth with a score of 16-14 in the final set.

Although the Thai team are no slouches, they had a tough road to the championship having to go through the two favourites Japan and then China.

On their undefeated run through the tournament, Thailand finally got the best of Japan after having lost in their previous 5 encounters.

China were also on their own undefeated streak throughout the tournament until the finals. China, ranked 6th in the world, have won the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship 13 times in the past.

Spurred on by the loud cheering and drums from their home fans as well as their unbelievable practice, the Thai team overcame their toughest adversaries to take the win and Thailand’s 3rd Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship win.

Although you’re probably much more likely to run into Thais that watch European football, when it’s time for the big match, you can get Thais around the country to tune in to watch volleyball. Cheers could be heard throughout the country as the Thai team scored the final point, as if they were fireworks during the New Year countdown.

All eyes are on them to see what their next accomplishment will be.
