Senban Butadon In Bangkok Serves Charcoal Grilled Pork Atop A Mountain Of Cheese

Senban Butadon in Bangkok

Japanese-style charcoal-grilled pork rice bowls, or butadon, will always hold a special place in our hearts.

There’s just something about charred, tender pieces of pork that has been smothered in glaze that makes the dish such a hit.

Senban Butadon in Bangkok takes this fan-favourite to the next level with their different takes on the classic butadon.

We covered it in 2020 previously, and our review is here. Now that it’s 2022, here’s what else to look out for.

Senban Butadon is a grilled pork restaurant in Bangkok

Senban Butadon is a restaurant that serves Japanese-style charcoal-grilled pork that’s located in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan district.

The restaurant’s name translates to “10 million” in English. With a name so great – yes, that’s a math pun – we can only imagine that their grilled pork would look and taste like 10 million bucks.

Senban Butadon’s interior decoration reminded us of anime cafes and restaurants in Japan. There were a lot of posters from iconic Japanese cartoos like One Piece and Gundam.

Items on the menu start as low as ฿80 (~USD2). We also noticed that they offer an impressively large variety of butadon – grilled pork rice bowls – and other non-pork dishes.

Thus, it’s an ideal spot for meals with friends who each have different taste preferences.

What we ordered at Senban Butadon

The Charcoal Grilled Pork with Lava Cheese ฿258 (~USD8) immediately jumped out at us. Yes, we understand that sometimes, it’s not the best idea to “fix” what isn’t broken, like a good-ole classic butadon.

However, there are very few things that melted cheese cannot improve.

The first thing we noticed upon the dishes being set on our table was the smoky aroma being emitted by the freshly grilled pork belly.

As for the taste, the pork was even better than how it looked and smelled, which we didn’t know was possible.

The already creamy and umami pork was made even creamier and more flavourful through the addition of cheese.

The restaurant also gave us their house-made chili powder, which elevated the experience even further. The sharp spiciness of the seasoning powder perfectly complemented the extremely savoury flavours from the pork and cheese.

A modern classic

It seems like multiple restaurants have been adding molten cheese to their dishes over recent years, and we’re loving it.

We appreciate the efforts taken in trying to remix classical favourites, like butadon, and are excited for what other creations this restaurant will come up with.
