You might think about PE or outdoor science projects when talking about learning outside the classroom. However, this school in Thailand has really had to hold their lectures outside the classroom due to unfortunate effects of the pandemic, with the school’s funds being slashed.

Students had their classes in tents

Baan Ta Puan Sang Saeng School in Maha Sarakham, a northeastern province of Thailand, has had to adapt to their own “new normal” of makeshift classrooms in tents.

Their previous classroom was old and completely infested with termites, so school director Vorawit Mitrawong decided to demolish it as he had already gotten a fund to build a new one at that time.

But due to COVID-19, the fund was unfortunately suspended, making the students have no rooms to study in. The teachers then had no choice but to hold classes in makeshift tents, giving lectures and conducting classes for over 300 students from kindergarten to grade 9.

Mr. Mitrawong also added that 17 students have since quit and moved to another local school as their parents were concerned about learning conditions.

While the overall situation of COVID-19 in Thailand seems to be improving, we hope that schools like this will receive the necessary funds soon so that students will have a space to study as per normal.
