This week has seen a series of significant jumps in COVID-19 cases in Thailand. But just when we think we’ve seen the highest surge yet with 89 cases yesterday, 188 new cases were declared today, 22nd March 2020. This brings the total number of infections in the country up to 599, from 411 yesterday.
Public Health Ministry spokesman Taweesin Wisanuyothin shared that a majority of the new cases are linked to a previous cluster of infections from Lumpini Boxing Stadium.
89 new cases from yesterday were linked to previous infections from the same boxing match, an entertainment complex, and a religious gathering in Malaysia, Bangkok Post announced.
People urged to not travel
Authorities have urged people to refrain from travelling both internationally and domestically, including workers in Bangkok not heading back to their home provinces in fear of further spreading the virus.
Bangkok Post also reported that the spike in cases does not necessarily say much about how quickly the virus is spreading in Thailand.
This is due to the fact that not many people are actually being tested for COVID-19, and the number of cases are “bound to rise” as more testing facilities are put into place.
