Yum Pla Daek – cheap Thai salads in Bangkok
Yum is a mouth-watering Thai meat salad that features a variety of flavours packed with umami goodness.
You can easily find yum places across Bangkok – from street food stores to high-end restaurants. If you aren’t too familiar with this scrumptious snack, we, as locals, are going to introduce Yum Pla Daek, a local yum place with authentic recipes besides the usual papaya and mango salads that cost only ฿20 each!
What to order
Start off with meat appetizers like Grilled Pork Neck, or Spicy Pork with Lime Salad.
Then, you can jump to its recommended dishes like Yum, a Thai-style meat salad made with meat of your choice and a generous amount of hot and spicy dressing.
Each dish comes in small but satisfactory portions, which is great as you will have space to try other menu items. There are many meat choices for you to choose from, ranging from seafood like shrimp, squid or oysters to other meat items like sausage, grilled pork neck or steamed pork roll.
Besides that, there are also both raw and cooked options for some seafood Yum menu items. If you are new to this kind of food, we recommend trying the cooked ones first.
These salads will bring you on a ride with their spicy flavours. If you cannot handle too much spiciness, make sure to have some iced drinks on hand. At the store, soft drinks are available at ฿20/ bottle, water at ฿10/ bottle. You can also have some sticky rice or rice noodles to go along with the meat salads for the best experience.
Plus, we recommend ordering the classic Somtum (papaya salad) that comes with fresh crispy papaya. Try a variety of toppings like Tum Thai (somtum with dried shrimps and fermented blue crab) or Tum Pla Ra (somtum with fermented fish).
Another recommended dish is Tom Leng, a spicy soup with pork ribs coming with a generous amount of chilli. The soup is spicy and has a clear sour kick to cut the heat. The meat is quite tender and tastes good with a spoonful of soup at the same time.
