Unfinished Coffee Roaster in Bangkok
Certain countries are famous for establishments with unfinished surfaces that pretty much look unfit for humans. These kinds of buildings were a mainstay back in the 1950s to 1970s in Europe, but some people today have a liking for them as they look cold and unusual, unlike other modern architecture we see nowadays.
Though brutalist buildings in Thailand have faded from the public eye over the years, it doesn’t mean you’ll have no hope in seeing them around in the 2020s. If you’re into brutalist concepts, Unfinished Coffee Roaster in Bangkok has an in-house roastery and many photogenic spots to please passionate cafe hoppers. Plus, guests can look forward to single-origin coffees brewed from exotic beans.
Here’s an overview of the cafe that’s located in the heart of Lad Phrao, so you’ll know you’re in the right place on your visit.

A Bangkok cafe styled to resemble Brutalist architecture
Once you swerve your car into the parking lot at Unfinished Coffee Roaster, you might come across a peculiar sight. The damaged white walls and scattered stones on the ground might either make you hesitate to walk in, or pique your curiosity about what lies behind these walls.
Perhaps you’ll be left wondering if this is really a cafe, or just an abandoned building. But upon entering, you’ll be surprised by the distinctive vibes inside while you sip on coffee in this literally incomplete establishment.
Looking straight towards the bar-counter, and your attention will be drawn by several sophisticated coffee machines sitting on top. On the right, you’ll notice a small tree that stands in contrast to the urban minimalism of the place. At some point, the nutty aroma of coffee beans that wafts lazily in the air will get you hustling to check out the menu ASAP.
While waiting to order, your eyes may wander and settle on this particular coffee roaster on the right of the bar-counter. Gazing at it – even in pictures – we’re tempted to get closer to check it out.
Of course, the roaster is not just for a display, but is actually used for roasting their single origin coffee beans.
Once you grab your cuppa, we recommend checking out the seating on the left side of the dining area. Partitioned by an iconic ruined wall, we’re positive you will rush to locate the best IG spot before even taking a sip of your coffee. Personally, we think the concrete steps within the circular space looks quite chic for portrait pics.
That said, we’re sure you will be hooked on the house’s character and there will be the next visits for sure.
Try their signature UNFINISHED Es-Yen drink for ฿120
If you’re a first-time guest, you might have a hard time picking a drink as the names don’t exactly reveal what’s in them. Don’t worry, we got you. Unfinished Es-Yen is their signature drink that we’d recommend as a representative of the cafe’s offerings.
Priced at ฿120 (~USD3.50), you’ll get a cup of espresso made from roasted Doi Chang beans, mixed with milk, and topped with whipped cream.
According to what we heard, many customers love ordering Unfinished Es-Yen as a perfect pairing with their Guest Banana Fritters for ฿75 (~USD2)/8 pieces. The item is also known as กล้วยแขก or กล้วยทอด in Thai which essentially refers to fried bananas. Interestingly, the snack is quite popular among Thai citizens and can be commonly found everywhere in the country. So if you’ve never had it before, you should definitely give it a go, especially with the signature drink we mentioned above.
As with most cafe hoppers, we know you don’t just plan on getting a drink or snack to sit idly by. Thankfully, this cafe boasts many hidden photogenic spots for you, even outdoors. So after some refreshments, take your time to explore the cafe’s hidden nooks and crannies for spots for impromptu photo ops. We’ll get your hunt started with this top pick – a minimalist alley right at the entrance where you can strike a lot of chic poses like an IG influencer. Your road to hundreds of likes on your feed begins now.
Getting to Unfinished Coffee Roaster
Fans of brutalist architecture might think there’s no hope of spotting those kinds of buildings these days, but let this cafe assure you that the opposite is true, at least at Unfinished Coffee Roaster. We’d say that establishment is one of those rare, themed cafes in Bangkok that’s not on the radar of most cafe hoppers just yet.
So, if you’ve got time to spare in the next week, we’re confident that visiting this cafe will spice up your weekend. Located in Lat Phrao, Bangkok, it’s pretty convenient to commute to, especially for BKK residents. We recommend getting off at the Lad Phrao MRT Station and hailing a taxi to get there. However, if you own a car yourself, it would be easier to drive over.
Feel free to share your fun experiences or portrait pics taken at the cafe with us. We’ll be more than happy to rate how cool your poses are – and we promise not to be brutal.
