Tom Toon Khun Ya porridge in Bangkok

Tom Toon Khun Ya has been around Bangkok’s Lad Phrao 101 neighbourhood for awhile now and has been serving its signature porridge that’s crazy popular with the locals.

With a special recipe passed down from their grandma, Tom Toon sells pocket-friendly meals with all sorts of toppings that keep their customers coming back again and again.

Over 20 toppings from seafood to fried snacks

In Thailand, it’s normal to find porridge (or joke) stalls everywhere. Usual toppings include chopped pork, chicken, or regular seafood items. But at Tom Toon, we had a hard time choosing from their wide variety of sides.

Prices start from ฿10 to ฿20, with an array of meats, seafood, fried snacks, and 3 types of eggs to add to your porridge. The toppings that you can’t miss include Bacon (฿20), Sweetened Pork (฿15), Chopped Pork (฿15), Chinese Sausage (฿15) and Fried Pork Sausage (฿15).

If you like seafood, you can opt for Fish (฿20), Squid (฿20), and Shrimp (฿20)

Add some crunch to your bowl with Fried Fish Snack (฿10), Crackling (฿15), or Fried Chicken Tendon (฿20)

After picking our sides, we were ready to dig in. First up, we tried the Original Porridge (฿15).

Though plain, it is well-seasoned and the addition of minced ginger, deep-fried garlic, and spring onions made this bowl delicious just on its own. We really liked the crunch form the fried fish snack and extra punch of flavour by adding in some bacon.

But star of our meal had to be the Tom Yum Porridge (฿15).

This comes with extra tom yum powder on top. Mix it all together and you’ll have a bowl of hot-and-sour porridge – great to have an iced drink on hand.

We got some Cha Yen Tai Tai (฿20), a sweet and mellow tea, to help with the heat. Tom Toon also has an iced pandan drink for free for customers to help themselves to.
