As if going to prison wasn’t bad enough, 2 restaurant owners in Thailand just got smacked with a 723-year sentence for a fraudulent seafood promotion.

Fake seafood buffet promotion

Prapassorn Bawornban and Apichart Bowornbancharak, the owners of Laemgate Infinite restaurant in Bangkok, had sold vouchers to an extremely cheap seafood buffet to customers, with prices as low as ฿88. However, they later backed out of the promotion, which understandably left customers angry and confused.

CNN reported that prosecuters said “they were away their offer could not be fulfilled.”

“It was impossible to sell such high quality food as advertised,” they added in a court argument.

It was also revealed that around 20,000 customers had purchased the vouchers after it was promoted on the restaurant’s social media channels like Facebook.

Sentence was reduced from 1,446 years

The 2 owners were first arrested in September and have been in detention since. They also pleaded guilty, and their sentence was reduced from 1,446 years to 723 years along with a fine of ฿1,807,500.

Back in 2017, Thai courts sentenced a fraudster to 13,000 years in prison.

The hefty sentences are due to multiple counts, but jail terms for public fraud do not exceed 20 years under Thai law, reports CNN.

Be wary not to get baited into such scams in the future!
