According to Thai belief, every home should have a spirit house as a sign of respect for the spirits that protect the property. However, many of such spirit houses are often left at temples when they get old.
A Thai monk from Wat Tung Noi in Ratchaburi had a creative idea to bring these unattended spirit houses back for a useful purpose.Â

The abbot of Wat Tung Noi shared with One 31 that there used to be a monk that raised rabbits at the temple. There only used to be 8, but there are over 250 bunnies now living on the temple grounds.

He also mentioned that the rabbits would enter the unused spirit houses to seek shelter, but there wasn’t enough for all of them. Donations from visitors were also not enough to buy food for the bunnies, and thus he decided to call for a spirit house donation in order to give them a proper home.Â

Aside from the increasing number of rabbits, many of them are also sick with illnesses like leprosy.Â
The abbot also mentioned that sadly, people have abandoned their pet bunnies at the temple as they couldn’t care for them. As such, they require proper medication to get better, which kind visitors have donated.

The abbot has given information for those interested in giving a helping hand to care for the rabbits. The temple is currently open to donations of rabbit food, unused spirit houses, as well as money for medication.
Donations can be made directly at Wat Tung Noi, or over the phone via +66 85 704 8896.

Abandoned animals are a serious issue and we are glad that the temple is doing what they can to care for the rabbits.Â
We hope they are open to giving some of the bunnies up for adoption to visitors serious about taking care of them too.
