Poon Wing Bangkok Is An Unlimited Conveyor Belt Buffet For Just ฿99

Kanom jeen buffet in Ramkhamhaeng

When you think of conveyor belt restaurants, most of us would go straight to sushi. But this all-you-can-eat restaurant is giving us something different.

Situated close to one of Bangkok’s well-known universities, Ramkhamhaeng University, Poon Wing Buffet has been serving kanom jeen noodles to locals and university folks in the area for 2 years.

Aside from its creative use of the conveyor belt, this restaurant is also known for its affordable prices. The buffet only costs ฿99 ( ~USD3.27) for adults and ฿49 ( ~USD1.62) for kids. Included in each buffet is a huge variety of curries, side dishes, drinks, and desserts – plus, there is no time limit!

What is kanom jeen?

For those of you who might not be familiar with kanom jeen, this is a type of noodle dish made with fermented rice flour. This gives the noodles a slight tang that pairs nicely with the refreshing fragrance of rice.

Locals mostly pair it with different curries, that vary according to the region. This can also be eaten alongside other dishes like som tum (papaya salad) and grilled fish.

What to try at Poon Wing

Once we were seated, we were amazed by just how many items were going by on the conveyor belt.

Besides the typical white noodles, the kanom jeen here comes in a multitude of colours from the rainbow, such as blue, orange, and green. All of the noodles here are coloured with natural ingredients, such as butterfly pea flower (purple), sappan wood (pink), and carrot (orange).

You’ll also see lots of curries whizzing by – here are the best choices to go along with your kanom jeen:

  • Green curry with chicken
  • Nam Ya (red fish curry)
  • Spicy curry with chicken’s feet
  • Northern curry with pork bones
  • Nam Prik (sweet peanut dressing)

Taste-wise, the curries here all were quite sweet, which is good for people who can’t handle spicy foods.

The green curry and nam ya curry are made with coconut milk-based broths, making them very rich and flavourful. The green curry had a good amount of bite-sized chicken that was tender and juicy.

We also tried the spicy curry with chicken feet and Northern curry with pork bones. As these are not made with coconut milk, the broths had a thinner, clearer consistency. Both offered tender pieces of meat for us to nibble on – especially the chewy chicken feet.

These were definitely the spicier curries out of the bunch, but not enough to make you drown in sweat – well, in my Thai opinion anyway!

Don’t forget to pick out some healthy side dishes too:

  • Cucumber
  • Cabbage
  • Long beans
  • Bitter cucumber
  • Beansprouts
  • Preserved radish
  • Hard-boiled egg
  • Pickled Chinese cabbage

These added a crunchiness to our kanom jeen, which was nice considering the noodles are really soft in texture.

Once we were done with our main course, we treated ourselves to some yummy ice cream that came with toppings like mini crackers, marshmallows, jelly, and cornflakes.
