What to get at Polo Fried Chicken

Appetisers

The menu here focuses on traditional north-eastern Thai cuisine, commonly known as E San. There is a good selection of appetisers such as som tum (spicy papaya salad), minced pork salad, and spicy soups.

We went with the Som Tum Poo Plara (฿60), a papaya salad with fermented fish and salted crab. The seafood didn’t have a strong fishy smell as the ingredients are properly boiled before being tossed in the salad.

Everything tasted fresh and we loved that the salad was spicy. However, if you can’t handle spice and still want to try this, just ask for it to be made less spicy.

Mains

After prepping ourselves with some salad, we were ready for what we came here for: the fried chicken. We ordered their signature Polo Fried Chicken (Half: ฿160 | Whole: ฿260) – crispy fried chicken with crunchy deep-fried garlic and dipping sauces.

Fried till perfectly golden brown

The chicken skin is really well-seasoned and has a rich flavour of pepper and spices. Beneath the crisp is tender and juicy meat with no “bloody” parts at all.

There are 2 dipping sauces that come with the chicken – sweet chilli and Jaew, a super spicy sauce made from grilled chilli. The spice is worth it, so give it a go (and have some water handy).

Another thing we liked about the chicken was that it came topped with fried garlic. It added a salty crunch to each bite and had a nice aroma too. We even saw some customers ordering extra portions of fried garlic for ฿30.

We also ordered some Sticky Rice (฿20) to go with our fried chicken. It is served in a small woven basket and is delicately cooked, ensuring that it is not too soft or gummy. We liked how the chewy texture of the rice paired with the crispy chicken and garlic.

There are other mains you can order with the fried chicken too, such as grilled fish and vegetables, and even comfort food like stir-fried basil pork.

Ambience at the restaurant

Located at Soi Polo, you can easily get here from Ploen Chit BTS. From the train station, you can take Bus 62 or a motorbike taxi, which will cost around ฿30. We decided to take a 15-minute walk, which made us all the more hungry for the fried chicken.

The store is separated into 2 areas: open air and air-conditioned. The staff shared with us that the open-air zone is only open during the mornings or when the store gets too crowded.

The setting is pretty simple – just metal tables and chairs that can hold over 20 customers. We went down in the afternoon and it was quite crowded with nearby office workers, so we’d recommend visiting the restaurant after lunchtime.

Try Bangkok’s best fried chicken

If you’re worried about the queues, fret not. The staff here are really efficient and everything moves quickly – from getting a table to the preparation of the food.

So whether you are a local or are visiting Bangkok in search for new food, make sure to drop by Polo Fried Chicken for a meal.
