We dare to say that Phu Kradueng is a landmark of Loei Province, well-known for extensive forested hiking trails, featuring red maple trees. Due to its stunning views and lush forests, locals choose to venture to this gem typically for 3D2N vacations during Thailand’s winter season.

The first challenge begins once you arrive at the site. Vacationers will be met with the first trail which is pretty steep and about 1-kilometre long. You can also grab a trekking pole provided at the site to help you with the climb.

But that’s not the only trail you can look forward to, as you’re hiking up. One of our favourite trails is Mountain Top or หลังแป in Thai. We find that this trail is easier as it’s not as steep as the first one. Along the way, there are also masses of pine trees to see along the way. If you visit in the winter, expect the trail to be covered with a thick fog, making it look rather mysterious.

Scenic waterfalls for a mid-climb break

Another highlight here is the Tum Yai Waterfall, one of the five waterfalls hidden in the jungles. After a long trek, you’ll probably run out of energy, so taking a short break at this waterfall will hopefully help to re-energise you for the next back-breaking part of the trail up the cliff.

P.S. If you visit in the winter, you’ll be surprised by the red maple leaves scattered amongst the rocks. Frankly, we wouldn’t miss this opportunity for ‘gram pics for sure.

Keep walking further away from the waterfall, and you’ll find another spot for a relaxing break – Anodard Pond. The pond is perfect for snapping reflection pics of the verdant plantations around the banks of the lake. Also, we’d recommend bringing some food to have a quick picnic here for lunch.

Make it to Pha Lom Suk to watch the sunset

Finally, we’ve come to our final destination. While the national park offers many viewpoint spots, Pha Lom Suk’s jutting cliff serves up a sweeping view of the mountains. Some daredevils typically stand at the edge to snap their money shots, but if you’re hoping to strike a pose for a memorable pic do be careful.

As the cliff faces westwards, it has become a desired spot for watching the sunset among visitors. Judging by the pictures, it’s no wonder many hikers are determined to make it up here as the stunning views are def worth their time and sweat.

If you plan to make it here by sundown, we advise checking what the time the sun will set on the day you’re climbing up, so you can plan your hiking trip accordingly. You’ll have to time your hike right, so you won’t miss the sunset once you reach the top.

Getting to Phu Kradueng

If you’re looking for an adventurous activity to do during a long holiday apart from camping in the forest, we’d say you won’t be disappointed with what you’ll get at Phu Kradueng. Even though a day of hiking may sound tiring, once you make it to the top, we bet your tiredness will disappear completely.

So if you’re visiting Loei for the first time, consider Phu Kradueng for a quick escape into nature from the city. Getting to the national park from the centre of Loei will take less than 2 hours by driving.
