Peh Chun Bangkok – Delicious 67-Year-Old Recipe Crab Noodles For Only ฿45

Cheap crab noodles In Bangkok

We often hear that old people give wise advice. Well, in Peh Chun Crab Noodles’ case, they also give delicious recipes as well.

For almost 6 years, Mr Bunjob, together with his wife and son, have been serving their family’s authentic crab noodles to locals and visitors in Bangkok’s Itsaraphap area who seek to taste this scrumptious dish.

Old family recipe

Mr Bunjob’s wife helps run the stall

Mr Bunjob revealed that his grandparents opened a well-known crab noodles stall in 1952 at Saphan Phut Bridge before it was discontinued by his father because he chose to open a coffee stall instead.

Mr. Bunjob

Years later, Mr Bunjob wanted to bring back his grandparents’ recipe and open a shop of his own. But the only problem was that he was too young to remember anything.

Fortunately, his father, who always used to help out at his parent’s stall in his younger days, remembered the recipe and passed it down to Mr Bunjob. So, he named the stall after his father, Peh Chun, to commemorate his memory.

The recipe is now 67 years old.

Dishes to try at Peh Chun’s

Like other places, more dishes have been added to the menu to meet customers’ demands. But the iconic Crab Noodles (Regular: ฿45 [ ~USD 1.5] | Extra: ฿60 [ ~USD2]) still remains as the star dish that Mr Bunjob proudly presents.

However, you can level up your crab noodles by adding crab claws and topping up other ingredients for ฿380* ( ~USD12.50). This is what we went for.

*The price can go up or down depending on the crab size that day.

The springy egg noodles were topped with sliced roasted pork, shredded chicken, shrimp and pork wontons, and boiled crab meat with a giant crab claw – there were so many types of meat and we loved it.

The crab meat was so fresh and retained a firm texture in every bite. It also gave the dish its signature “sweet” taste from all that crab juice. If crab meat is your weakness, you’ll love this no doubt.

The soup is made with the whole crab, and never before had we tasted crab soup. It was much lighter than a typical pork bone soup with a sweet hint from the crab essence – very refreshing.

Kindly ask the staff for the soup if it’s not been served along with your order, especially during busy hours.

Another dish we tried was Roasted Pork Ribs With Steamed Rice (Regular: ฿35 [ ~USD 1.15] | Extra: ฿45 [ ~USD1.48]) that came sprinkled with crispy fried garlic. The ribs were so soft it fell off the crunchy gristles as we tried to scoop it out, and it just melted in our mouths.

Crispy fried garlic added a nice crunchy texture and aroma to the dish while the boiled bok choy is a great palate cleanser.

Both dishes should be eaten with chilli and garlic in vinegar because it brings out the flavours of the meats well, especially the crab.

Humble shophouse in Bangkok

Located near Big C supermarket, Peh Chun Crab Noodles is a humble shophouse with a seating area inside and little cooking area in the front.

On hot days, there are fans and even air-con to cool down customers, so you don’t have to worry about melting under the sun here.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is the crowd. We would recommend avoiding coming here during lunch hours since the place is usually packed with students from the nearby university.

There’s a reason this age-old crab noodles recipe is making a strong come back after being gone for a generation. And for this alone, you shouldn’t skip on these tasty noodles the next time you’re in Bangkok.
