Traditional Thai performances on Facebook
Many people have been affected by COVID-19, with a major group being those who work in travel and events. Many are forced to cancel shows and concerts during this time, such as this theatre troupe in Kampangpetch province Li Kea Klong Khung Bumrung Sil.
With all of their performing schedules cancelled, this group has adapted by performing their show online via Facebook live.

Likay or “ลิเก” is a traditional Thai theatre performance that brings folk tales and fables to life on stage. The actors and actresses will wear the glamorous costumes and accessories to perform, and the show is similar to musicals.
The show is popular among older Thai people and is usually held at local festivals and merit festivals hosted at temples.
This team’s name is Likay Klong Khung Bumrung Sil, managed by the leading teacher Mr Satern Nakmeng or teacher Phlay. He offers opportunities for underprivileged children to be performers and get some income through these engaging shows.

With the pandemic, they have no work and events lined up, which has had an impact on all the children in the team. So, Mr, Phlay came up with the idea to put their show online on Facebook.

The show starts at 6PM every day on the teacher’s Facebook page, สะเทืัอน นาคเมือง. They’ve also changed their content from Thai fables to stories related to COVID-19 – like how to stay away from the virus and how to wash your hands the proper way.
The team also makes sure to maintain proper social distance and also wear face masks while on the stage. This is not only to protect themselves, but also to raise the awareness of the virus to viewers.

Other than performing, Mr. Phlay also teaches all his children how to cook Thai desserts in order to get more income during this hard time.
Let’s enjoy the show and support the team
If you are interested in watching them to show your support, you can contact them on Facebook at สะเทืัอน นาคเมือง or their official page, ลิเกเด็กคลองขลุงบำรุงศิลป์.
A million thanks to teacher Phlay for his good heart and taking care of his kiddos. We’re rooting for all of you who are facing difficulties at this time. Be strong!
