Thai rice soup featured in Michelin Guide
Yaowarat, also known as Bangkok Chinatown, is known for being a food haven amongst Bangkokians and tourists alike. But stepping aside to a more quiet spot along Chan Road is where you can find hidden gems such as Hia Whan Khao Tom Pla, a Thai rice soup store that’s been on the Michelin Guide’s list of recommendations for 3 years.
Here’s what you can get here.
What to order here
Rice soup is a common comfort food that Thais love having, and it comes with lots of seafood toppings like prawn and fish.
We got the Seafood Rice Soup (฿250) that came with a generous portion of shrimp, squid, and grouper fish slices. The size of the toppings were impressive, and we tucked into the succulent and juicy pieces of seafood. Everything was really fresh and did not have any “fishy” smell.
The clear soup is light on the palate yet flavourful from the pepper and Thai celery.
The dish came with a fermented bean paste sauce that gave each bite a salty kick, so dip your fish and shrimp while eating for extra flavour. Hia Whan Khao Tom Pla sometimes has special ingredients on offer, so check out what is on display when there or stay tuned on their Facebook page.
While here, order some Ba Teng (฿50); caramelised pork that is a perfect combination of sweet and salty. The pork meat comes with a juicy streak of fat that’ll have you chomping down the morsels without thinking about the calorie count.
Salmon lovers must order the refreshing Spicy Salmon Salad (฿250) for slices of fresh fish garnished with lime juice, fresh chilli, chopped garlic, and peppermint leaves.
