On Thursday, Facebook page Thai News Pix shared a story and photos of Mr. Wattana Thaisa-nguanvorakul or Mai, an ex-golf coach who is now working as a doughnut seller on the Bangkok streets after a golf school he worked at closed due to COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, Mr. Mai revealed that he had a hefty income each month. However, he lost his income when the closure took place in March to curb the infections.

Mr. Mai said he started looking for alternative jobs because he still had bills to pay. So, he ended up applying for a local doughnut shop near his condominium.

Embarrassed at first

The job required him to sell bags of doughnuts on the roads during the red traffic light.

Mr. Mai admitted that he was embarrassed at first, which hindered him from approaching customers. Luckily, he became more comfortable after a while.

He also calculated that he walks back and forth on the street for about 20km each day.

Mr. Mai also revealed that a lot of golf coaches and golfers he knows have been affected by the closure and had to seek other career paths during the pandemic.

“Some [golfers] sell fabric face masks while others sell food and juices,” he said. “Everybody needs to adapt [to the situation] and start thinking about a back-up plan for the future.”

Help each other out by supporting local businesses and we’ll get through this dire time together.
