Khao Moo Tod Here Wong – Deep-Fried Pork With Free-Flow Rice At ~$1 In BKK

Khao Moo Tod Here Wong near BTS Wongwian Yai

Deep-fried pork with rice might sound like an unassuming, simple dish, but making it delicious is not that easy. You might get rubbery or oily pork instead of mouthwatering crispy skin if done wrong.

If you are not a master chef to recreate the dish on your own, then Khao Moo Tod Hia Wong is the best choice to get a flavourful and affordable plate of deep-fried pork with all-you-can-eat rice for only ฿34 (~USD1).

What to order

Even though there is only one item served here, the shop still has a big queue every day – especially at noon when regulars drop by for lunch. We arrived at the place at around 1pm and found a line of 5-7 customers waiting for their meal.

The Deep-fried Pork Rice (฿34) is the reason for their long queues. We observed the owner dip slices of streaky pork into flour and sizzle it in a vat of hot oil, having it turn a beautiful golden brown before plopping it on a plate of warm white rice.

After about 10 minutes of queuing, we got a plate of Extra Deep-fried Pork Rice (฿39, ~USD1) and a runny Egg (฿6)

The store owner will allow you to adjust the amount of rice by yourself because it’s free-flow.

The deep-fried pork has a very crunchy and chewy texture, and tastes a little salty with a hint of pepper.

To spice your dish up, there is some Jaew dipping sauce which is made from ground roasted chillies. We were impressed that the otherwise dry dish became more juicy and spicy with a simple addition of the sauce.

Don’t miss out and treat yourself to the soft-boiled egg like we did. The creamy yolk made the dish all the more tasty and added an element of “sauciness” to the dish.

If you’re here simply for the main star of the show, the deep-fried pork is offered on its own at ฿34 (~USD1)/100g.

A yummy lunch time option

Just a few minutes away from Exit 2 of BTS Wongwiam Yai, you will find Khao Moo Tod Hia Wong. The store is made up of 2 shophouses – one is a cooking area and the other seats customers in a simple dining area.

Wong (or Here Wong), the store owner, is very friendly and kind. He always asks and talks to his customers while his hands are busy preparing meals.

With the price, portion, quality, and easy accessed location, this deep-fried pork is another worthy eatery to drop by if you are around BTS Wongwian Yai.
