Both groups returned on 8-9th July and are currently quarantined after being tested positive over the weekend.

Second COVID-19 wave scare

There was a recent second-wave scare in eastern Rayong when CCTV surveillance footage showed a test-positive Egyptian soldier and his group walking around Passione Shopping Destination (formerly Laemgthong mall) for a couple of hours before heading back to their hotel.

Although the group wore a mask at all times and only roamed around, locals were concerned of a possible spread. The man was reportedly staying with 30 others at the D Varee Diva Central Rayong Hotel, which has closed down for disinfection.

Rayong responded by closing down more than 200 schools throughout the province. The mall was disinfected and people who visited over the weekend were swab-tested.

Surin announced yesterday (15 July) that those coming from Rayong and Bangkok’s Wattana and Khlong Toei areas will need to self-quarantine for 14 days within a day of arriving in the province.

Koh Samet also closed off visitors in response to the incident.

If you’re travelling to other countries at this time, please make sure to follow the rules in place to avoid complications for reopenings. Let’s hope there isn’t another incident like this one any time soon.
