Walking around BKK while shopping can get tiring, leaving you a sweaty mess with a hungry tummy to boot. So if you’re in the Iconsiam area and are in need of a quick break, take a quick 5-10 walk to Talat Klong San to enjoy some delicious and affordable dessert.

One of the most popular desserts here is rice balls in sweet coconut milk from Bua Loy Kai Kem Tha Nam Klong San, which has been offering their signature dishes for over 20 years.

Rice balls in sweet coconut milk, or Bua Loy in Thai, is made from glutinous rice flour mixed with cassava starch. Then, the rice balls are boiled in sweet coconut milk and usually eaten with a soft boiled egg.

The rice balls are traditionally made without colouring, but this store offers over 7 colours of rice balls. Plus, everything is made from natural food colouring:

  • Pink – beetroot
  • Purple – sweet potato
  • Orange – carrot
  • Yellow – pumpkin
  • Blue – butterfly peas
  • Green – pandan
  • White (plain)

There is an option for you to choose how you’d like your Bua Loy; with egg (฿25) or without egg (฿20).

We tried their signatures, Bua Loy With Egg (฿25) and Bua Loy With Salted Egg Yolk (฿30).

Our bowl came packed with colourful rice balls together with a soft, runny egg, and toppings including taro, corn, and water chestnuts.

The sweet coconut milk was not overpowering and made each bite creamy and delicious. The rice balls here are smaller than at other stores and went well with the coconut milk

Bua Loy With Salted Egg Yolk

This restaurant has been serving their Bua Loy with Salted Egg Yolk way before the salted egg trend hit restaurants everywhere. In fact, they’re been selling this for 2 decades!

Compared to the soft-boiled egg, the salted egg yolk added a saltier and more gritty texture to the dish. If you can’t make a decision to go for boiled egg or salted egg yolk, you can have both at ฿35
