Ban Hing is a Bangkok shophouse
Shophouses and hawker stalls are a huge part of Southeast Asia’s culinary culture.
At these establishments, you can always expect the best of the staple dishes – like stir-fried noodles and fried rice – and that the ingredients used will always be fresh.
Ban Hing is a shophouse in Bangkok that delivers all that and more.

Ban Hing is a vintage Sino-Portuguese building in Bangkok
Ban Hing is a shophouse located on the Western outskirts of Bangkok in Chaeng Watthana. Yes, the town where the immigration office is.
Brightly painted in yellow with three tall black shutters shutters topped with stain glass windows on the restaurant’s second storey, Ban Hing isn’t hard to pick out from the other buildings in the area.
After all, it’s pretty difficult to find classic Sino-Portuguese architecture in the vast city of Bangkok.
The first thing visitors will notice is the old-school furniture: the vintage bamboo dining chairs, and the small circular dark-wood dining tables topped with marble.
Dark wood also seems to be all over the restaurant, reminding us of classic Chinese shophouses.
From the condiment holders, the clock, the kitchen counters and even the cupboards.
What to get at Ban Hing
Ban Hing’s menu is just as impressive as its design. They have shophouse favourites like stir-fried noodles, fried rice and fried tofu.
There was no way we were gonna go to a shophouse and not order Hokkien Mee, so we ordered two.
We got the restaurant’s signature twist on the classic dish: the Hokkien Pad Sauce X.O. ฿80 (~USD2.40).
We’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys the spicy and smoky flavours, as the umami tastes clung onto the extra-fresh seafood and springy noodles.
We also got the Hokkien Mee Seafood with Steamed Egg ฿110 (~USD3.25), which, unsurprisingly, came with extra fresh shrimp and octopus.
They make it with a special sauce that brings all the different flavours together. Their recipe also happens to be 90 years-old, so you know it’s only gotten better with time.
Shophouses in Bangkok
Shophouses are notorious for their simple-yet-amazing recipes that absolutely no one can recreate. If you’re craving some Hokkien Mee, we’d add this restaurant to your list.
Plus, you could easily stop by after you’ve done your “90-Day Reporting” at the immigration office that’s only 15 minutes away from Ban Hing.
