No April Fool’s in Thailand

We all know that April Fool’s Day is the day to prank your friends and family; but it might not be a good idea during the COVID-19 outbreak – especially if you’re planning to fool people into thinking that you have the virus.
The Office of the Attorney General deputy spokesman Kosonlavat Intujunyong warned people that those who lie about having COVID-19 on April Fool’s Day may face strict punishment as Thailand is currently under an emergency decree.

Jail time and a hefty fine

According to the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), aka the cyber police, folks who spread false information about the virus online – including resharing – can potentially face jail time of up to 5 years and/or ฿100,000 fine.
This wrongdoing falls under Thailand’s Cybercrime Act section 14(2) and (5) – regarding putting and forwarding false data online which could “cause panic” to the public.
If you really can’t suppress your mischievous side today, stick with good ol’ pranks like a stapler in jello for now to avoid the punishment.
