Chiang Mai’s ‘Senior Market’ Is Run Entirely By Retirees, Gives Elders A Chance To Make Friends

A special project for retirees

Loneliness is always cruel, especially if you’re an elderly citizen who has already retired from work, giving little chance for interaction with others outside one’s home.

Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center, an organisation in Chiang Mai, wanted to make sure their seniors won’t have to face such an experience, so they came up with “The Senior Market Project.”

This monthly market is run entirely by a retiree community in the province.

Most of the products here are homemade food cooked or farmed by members, such as pickled garlic, grilled banana, and local fruits. There are also non-food products like handmade wooden baskets and clothes.

While this is a full-on market with goodies and food, it is also space for all the retirees to come together and mingle with each other. More importantly, focusing on the market keeps them busy which prevents them from depression and loneliness.
