Thailand Officially Declares State Of Emergency, Decree To Include Travel Bans & Curfews

The Thai government has officially declared an emergency decree amid as the COVID-19 outbreak escalates in the country, with 827 cases as of today. The decree will take place from 26th March – 30th April 2020

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said the enactment of the 2005 Royal Decree of Emergency Situations is needed to curb the infection numbers in the country.

As of today, the virus has since claimed 5 Thai lives: 4 inside the country, 1 abroad

What does this mean for folks in Thailand?

After the decree takes place, the Prime Minister will have full power to implement policies and enforce special rules to control the outbreak.

Although the specific measures regarding the situation have yet to be announced, the decree is known to grant authorities power to set curfews, travel bans, shutdowns and media censorship, as well as the closure of buildings without needing warrants.
