Sweet soy sauce boba in Thailand
Images adapted from: Nguan Chiang
We are no strangers to weird food combinations today, which often go viral for being kinda crazy – looking at you, soy sauce ice cream with Sriracha.
But Nguan Chiang, one of the biggest condiment brands in Thailand, still managed to baffle Thai netizens by launching a special Sweet Soy Sauce Boba Tea for ฿20 at Makro Horeca 2019, an industrial food fair in Bangkok.

Yep, you read that right. The tea was made with sweet soy sauce – the same sauce we often have with our chicken and rice.
While some expressed an interest to try it and wondered what would it taste like, many were simply squeamish when heard about this strange item.
Translation: You must be kidding me!
Translation: I wonder what it tastes like.
Translation: This looks quite scary, but many have said it’s delish.
Was only available for limited time
Sadly, the fair ended on 24th November 2019 and since this special drink was created just for this event, we might not get to try it anytime soon.

But seeing as to there being such a high demand to try it, Nguan Chiang might bring the item back or even set up a permanent shop – like what sauce company Deksomboon did with their soy sauce ice cream.
Feedback was good from people

Despite all the skeptics, this sweet soy sauce boba got rave reviews from those who tried it. Some even said it would be sad to not be able to find this bubble tea anywhere after the event.
Translation: I tried it and it was such a treat.
Translation: Delicious. It tasted like sugarcane. I wonder how we can have more of it now that the event is over?!
Food with weird concepts like this always get us intrigued – but we’re not complaining. We hope this sweet soy sauce boba will make a comeback so the rest of us can try it soon!
