On 8th August 2022, Thaiger reported that Ed Smith, a philosophy student from the University of Cambridge, ascended to the top of a mountain, Doi Suthep, in Chiang Mai, blindfolded. The reason why he did so was to fundraise for a charity called Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) which supports his blind sister.

With help from his girlfriend, Smith reportedly spent 72 hours climbing up the mountain with a blindfold over his eyes. He told BBC that the hardest part about trying to scale the peak without his vision was that he had to rely on his girlfriend throughout the entire journey.

After the climb, he said he had learned the challenges his blind sister faces. He also felt a sense of achievement after that.

According to Thaiger, Ed Smith has so far managed to raise ฿143,000 or £3,300, which was way higher than his target of £2,500.
