Long holiday brings in the cash
COVID-19 has been nothing short of an economic nightmare, especially in countries like Thailand that heavily relies on tourism. But the recent long weekend brings good news, with The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) sharing that it generated ฿8.8 billion in revenue, Bangkok Post reports.
4th and 7th September were treated as replacement holidays for Songkran, which were postponed back in April.
Looking into weekday travels
Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT, shared that the agency had met its revenue goal and is looking into exploring more initiatives to promote domestic travel as part of their “Rao Thiao Duay Kan” (Travel Together) campaign.
“We want to make it more convenient for people to travel,” said Mr. Supasorn.
TAT is looking to encourage people to travel on weekdays, meaning more holidays could be “created” to give locals an opportunity to visit other cities across the country.
The Songkran break saw tourism boom in locations such as Khao Yai and Prachinburi. However, there was also an increase in road accidents, with ministry data reporting 325 car accidents and 48 fatalities, and 92 accidents and 25 deaths for motorcycles.
Anyway, more holidays would help lighten the mood amid the pandemic, whether one chooses to travel or not – fingers crossed for more off days!
