Thai Schools Shut Down Again Due To New Spread Of COVID-19

Preparing for possible second wave

Just as we thought things were going back to normal, Thailand saw a spike of COVID-19 infections on 14th July 2020. Besides the region where those infections were reported like Rayong, many places nationwide have now shut their doors once again amid the fear of an increase in transmissions – including schools.


Safety first

To prevent the return of COVID-19, many schools nationwide have decided to temporarily close again after acknowledging that some students might be at risk of catching the virus. Besides 127 schools in Rayong, where the spike took place, Bangkok Post reported that some more schools have turned to safety first mode:

  1. [Bangkok] Sai Namthip School in Sukhumvit Soi 22 moved all classes online since 17th July 2020 onward, Wachirathamsatit School in Sukhumvit 101 temporarily closed the school.
  2. [Trat] Trat Trakankhun School closed as one of their students had been to Rayong about the same time as the Egyptian soldier who got infected.
  3. [Samut Prakan] Wisutthikasattree School closed as two students had been to the same shopping mall in Rayong on the same day as the Egyptian group.
  4. [Chon Buri] Sawang Boriboon Wittaya School will close for 5 days to sanitise the premises as parents of some students have been to Rayong in recent days.
  5. [Uthai Thani] Uthai Wittayakhom School will close for 3 days as a sibling of one student were in the same hotel as the infected group from Egypt.
  6. [Buri Ram] Kanlayaprasit School will close for 7 days after the school found one teacher who visited her alumni who worked at the hotel where the patients from Egypt stayed.
