Roong Rueng Bangkok – Super Cheap Pork Tom Yum Noodles Featured In Michelin Guide

Tasty tom yum pork noodles in Phrom Phong

Phrom Phong is one of Bangkok’s upscale residential areas and is home to high-end shopping centres like Emporium and Emquartier, which are many people’s shopping destination over the weekends.

Luxury malls are perfect for window shopping during a hot day, but it offers little to no budget meals as you would always find on the streets of Bangkok.

Situated only a 5-minute walk right by BTS Phrom Phong station is Roong Rueng Pork Tom Yum Noodles, which has been serving scrumptious pork noodles for over 55 years. It’s run by Ms. Bow, one of the family’s third-generation members. And thanks to its delicious recipe, the stall was featured on the 2018 Michelin Guide.

All dishes share the same price range, depending on the portion: small (฿50 ~USD1.64), medium (฿60 ~USD1.96), and large (฿70 ~USD2.29)

Signature noodle dishes

We started with the crown jewel: Tom Yum Soup with Egg Noodles (Small: ฿50 ~USD1.64). The soup has an authentic tom yum taste to it from a mixture of fresh lime juice and spicy pan-fried chilli paste, which adds a smokiness to the broth.

Don’t worry about the soup being too spicy either. The sharp tom yum flavour is balanced out by the sweetness of the pork-bone broth that is used as the soup base.

But if you have a strong palate and crave for the taste of rich and spicy tom yum, get their Dried Tom Yum with Small White Noodles (Small: ฿50 ~USD1.64) instead.

The perfectly-cooked noodles come with bite-sized pieces of tender stewed pork offal, soft fish balls, and home-made minced pork mixed with garlic and pepper.

Clear Soup with Fine White Noodles is tailored for folks who would love to fully taste the sweet pork broth without having tangy and spicy flavours overshadowing it.

A must-order side dish is a bowl of Fish Crackers (฿20 ~USD0.65). This is fried salmon skin, which will add a crunchy texture to your main course.

You can even munch on it as a snack or an appetiser. Each piece is thin and crispy and is well-seasoned with flavoured powders we can’t quite put our fingers on – perhaps it’s a secret recipe!

If the original flavour intensity doesn’t tickle your tastebuds, you can adjust the dish with condiments like chilli powder, ground roasted peanuts, sugar, fish sauce, vinegar-infused chilli, and fresh lime juice.

Eat at a nostalgic shophouse in BKK’s upscale neighbourhood

This legendary noodle store began as a little shophouse and has since expanded into 3 lots to catch up with the growing demands from customers. International clients are a big group here, so the restaurant has 4 languages on their menu for everyone’s convenience: Thai, English, Mandarin, and Japanese.

You’ll still be able to feel a nostalgic vibe from old-fashioned tiled walls when inside. Even the Chinese-style round chairs and granite tables look like they have been passed down from a much older time.

And like the old days, the seating areas are not air-conditioned. However, there are giant fans to help you cool down.
