People have been staying at home way more during self-isolation, but this doesn’t mean a decrease in expenses when it comes to daily essentials.
Amid the financial crisis where many have taken a hit to their incomes and jobs, distributors and retailers have joined hands to offer discounts up to 58% on essential items for buyers in Thailand.
Items on discounts ranging from 5-58%
Since the outbreak has been widespread across the country, sales for a variety of items ranging from essential foods like canned fish and water to daily necessities like tissue papers have surged, said Somchai Pornrattanacharoen, president of the Thai Retailers and Wholesalers Association.
To seek a way to help people with their financial problems, Jurin Laksanawisit, Commerce Minister, together with representatives from over 14 manufactures and trade operators and 8 department stores had a meeting on 16th April 2020.

Mr Jurin asked all the agencies in the meeting to lend a hand and reduce prices of their products’ – mainly for food and daily essentials. This is to help customers lower their cost of living amid the COVID-19 outbreak, which is affecting households across the country.
The companies have joined the scheme and 6 main ranges of items are on discount:
- Food and beverage such as rice, cooking oil, instant noodles, milk
- Frozen finished food such as frozen food from 7-11 and CP Freshmart
- Seasoning sauce such as soy sauce and oyster sauce
- Daily-use products such as tissue paper, powder, toothpaste and sanitary napkin
- Body care products such as soap and shampoo
- Cleaning products such as cleaning solution
The discounts will range from 5% to 58%, depending on each product’s production cost. Over 72 goodies will be discounted at supermarkets and local stores until 30th June 2020.
It’s good that prices are lower to ease any financial stress people might be facing. However, if you are about to go out for a grocery run, make sure to only buy what you need, and to wear a face mask to keep yourself safe.
