COVID-19 hospital in Phuket closed

Phuket is temporarily closing down its field hospital for COVID-19 and putting it on standby after all patients on the island have now recovered.
The closure was announced after the last 2 patients were discharged from the hospital on 30th May 2020.
The field hospital was set up at the unfinished new Provincial Hall

Pakkapong Tawipat, the resort island’s governor, said on 31st May that it was “the day that Phuket had zero Covid-19 patients.”
“Our next job is to rehabilitate the province’s economy, especially the tourism industry that has been severely affected by the outbreak,” he added.

Dr Busaya Santisan, who was the director of the field hospital, commended the government officers for setting up the hospital and, especially, the healthcare staff for tirelessly working here.
“In addition, the readiness of the personnel on duty at this field hospital came with heart and sacrifice. Although they knew they would be at risk, they performed their duties in taking good care of patients,” said the doctor.

According to The Phuket News, a total of 121 patients were admitted to the field hospital.
Since the outbreak, Phuket reported 227 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 224 recoveries and 3 deaths. With this number, the island had the highest infection rate per capita in the country.
We’re looking forward to not seeing the hospital to reopen again.
