Paing Takhon, Myanmar’s Viral ‘Aang’ Look-Alike Publicly Condemns Coup

Update: On 8th April 2021, the actor and top model was arrested. His sister, Thi Thi Lwin posted on Facebook that “some 50 soldiers with eight military trucks” arrived at his mother’s house to arrest Pang Thakon, according to Channel News Asia. She further stated that because he is “seriously ill”, they arrested him calmly without violence.”

On 2nd February 2021, the Myanmar military staged a coup and declared a state of emergency for one year. They claimed that the recent election results were fraudulent and detained elected officials from the League of Democracy Party, including state counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

However, Burmese model-turned actor Paing Thakon, publicly condemned the coup in a series of Instagram posts.

Arguably Myanmar’s most famous actor, Paing Thakon became a viral internet sensation recently thanks to his striking resemblance to Aang, The Live Airbender. The popular actor has a huge number of Thai and Burmese fans, and boasts over 1 million followers on Instagram . 

He was listed on The Myanmar Times’s Top 10 Actors article in 2019, and had his first fan meet in Thailand in the very same year.

The 24-year old model shared a strongly worded statement on his Instagram account, where he publicly condemned the military coup.

He posted multiple posts drawing attention to what is happening in Myanmar now, and even uploaded an image of himself with the mocking jay gesture. Despite the potential consequences that his political stand could have on his burgeoning career in showbiz, Paing Takhon seems to  show no fear of speaking up against the military power that is currently in control of Myanmar.
