Amid the recent Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak, many Bangkokians have started to protect themselves in every possible way, including wearing medical masks in public places. Unfortunately, not everyone can even afford to do so.

Yesterday, netizen Ping Chirawimuthrath posted a picture on Facebook, showing a kind woman handing a pack of medical masks to a homeless grandma under Phra Khanong BTS station in Bangkok

In the caption, he explained that he heard the aunty say, “Grandma, you use one sheet at a time.” Then, she went on teaching the grandma on how to use it properly. Mr. Ping also mentioned that it’s nice to see people looking out for each other during a time like this.

Doctors have advised that surgical masks are most effective in this case, instead of more heavy-duty options like N95 masks which are more suited for pollution and haze.

For maximum protection, it’s important to know how to wear these masks. Here’s how:

  1. Check for any defects or tears on your mask. If there’re any, throw them away and use a new one.
  2. The inside of most medical masks are white and it should be towards your face. Ensure the coloured side is outwards.
  3. Adjust the mask well by securely tuck it behind your ears. The top part, which is a bit stiff but bendable, allows you to mould the mask to the shape of your nose. If needed, you can also pull the top and bottom over your chin to make it fit your face more.
  4. Avoid reusing masks and change it daily if possible. When taking off the mask, you should handle it by the ear loops and clean your hands thoroughly with soap.

Also make sure that you take the proper care to help prevent further spread of the virus:

Just like Mr. Ping shared, it’s always nice to see people helping and caring about each other, especially during a tough time like this – more power to you, kind aunty.
