Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has released an official statement regarding the period of Thailand’s nationwide emergency decree, which comes into effect on Wednesday midnight till 30th April 2020.
In the latest update, foreigners are now barred from entering the country in order to curb the number of infections being brought in by visitors.
This applies to foreigners coming in from all entry points via land, air, and sea, except “shippers, diplomats, drivers, pilots” and those with permission by PM Prayut, Bangkok Post reports.
Under the decree, Thai citizens abroad are allowed to return.
Public gatherings now banned
The announcement also stated that those under 5 and above 70 are highly advised to stay at home as they fall into vulnerable groups, and that public gatherings are banned.
PM Prayut stated that all shops selling essentials like consumer goods and good will still be allowed to operate, though those found to be hoarding products will “face stern action”. This has been an apparent issue as many have turned to panic buying in light of the outbreak.
He also mentioned that “only necessary measures will be issued” in order to prevent the virus from spreading.
Violation of any regulations under the decree are punishable with a jail term of up to 2 months under the 2005 Royal Decree on Emergency Situations.
More safety measures are expected to be rolled out. Stay tuned for updates.
