Stricter measures in Thailand
Pornpipat Benyasri, Defence Forces chief, urged people to stay at home over the weekend in an effort to minimise further spread of the virus.
Gen Pornpipat is in charge of security for the COVID-19 Administration Centre. The announcement comes after Thailand saw a sudden surge in cases, believed to stem from an initial cluster after 11 people were infected after attending a party.
“We should control ourselves instead of being forced to by the state,” he said, warning that a curfew would be ‘inevitable’ if the virus spreads any further due to people not practicing the necessary safety procedures. This includes self-isolation and social distancing as much as possible.
He added that cooperation was needed from the public to cancel any upcoming plans over the weekends and stay indoors instead.
