Cases at record number in BKK
Just yesterday, 22nd April 2021, Thai government officials reaffirmed that they will proceed with the nation’s timeline towards reopening despite the recent surge in Covid-19 cases.
However, that was before Thailand saw over 2,000 new confirmed cases within one day, according to the Centre of Covid-19 Situation (CCSA).

Highest recorded daily case number
On 23rd April 2021, Thailand recorded 2,070 new cases, and of this number, 740 cases were detected in Bangkok. This is related to B117 a.k.a. the “UK strain” that has been rapidly spreading over the past weeks, as doctors revealed.
The recent spike in Covid-19 cases this year dates back to around 1st April 2021 and is linked to cluster cases originating in Thonglor clubs, Phuket’s music festival, and now Songkran. Since then, 21, 320 Covid-19 cases have been reported.
There are also additional numbers from other provinces: 38 cases from Surat Thani and 35 from Rayong, and 125 in Chonburi. 237 cases were also linked to meditation centres in Chiang Mai.
Best to stay indoors for now
In the midst of Covid-19 surge, maintaining social distancing is key to keeping the situation under control. One such way to do that is by staying home. Though Thailand has numerous restaurants and takeout options, it’s best to limit contact with people right now and get a jump on your future cooking career. So, now’s the time to be generous when – socially distanced – grocery shopping.
